Come Celebrate With Us At Upcoming Events!

Every August the Museum hosts the only Cucuzza Day Celebration in the US. A Cucuzza is an Italian summer squash which was a staple for the local immigrants. These squash can grow up to 3 - 6 feet in length, sometimes growing up to 10 inches in just one day. The seeds were dried out and saved from the last Cucuzza of the season, then shared among friends and relatives hoping to grow their own the next season. Contact the museum for seeds for planting.

Today, in many Italian American home gardens, the Cucuzza grows like wildfire along a fence or trellis in late summer months.

Our board of directors meets each month at the Museum to keep thing running smoothly. This is not a closed meeting and we welcome our commujnity to come get involved and see what exciting things are coming up. Meeting starts at 6 pm.

In the tradition of a Sicilian village, we turn the street outside of our Museum into an 'outdoor family dining experience'. From 6-10 pm indulge in a unique cultural experience with Sicilian and Italian cuisine, music, museum tours and a silent auction. Ticket and auction sales go toward improving our Museum. Designed so that anyone who is interested can learn from a beginner level and no prior knowledge is necessary. Each Saturday at the Museum, this five-week course will incorporate aspects that connect the Sicilian language to its people, history, culture and arts. Classes have concluded this summer and will resume after the new year. Check back here for more info.

The Independence Sicilian Heritage Festival is held each year the second weekend of March in the streets of downtown Independence. This Festival celebrates the Sicilian heritage of Independence, Louisiana with great food, music, rides and much more. Come join the fun!
